While I am very serious about my career and admittedly spend a lot of time working, that doesn’t mean that I don’t like to enjoy some recreation from time to time. As time has passed I have become more and more passionate about two specific recreational activities that can both be enjoyed near my Georgia home – Deep Sea Fishing and Vintage Car Racing. The Georgia coast offers many different options for deep sea fishing and it is a quick trip out to any number of spots to get a line in the water and face the challenge of trying to catch some rather large fish. Likewise, the challenge of vintage car racing is close at hand here in Georgia. There are many tracks and races all around the state which provide the opportunity to chase the thrill of driving some beautiful old vehicles around small tracks with other automobile enthusiasts. Regardless of which passion I am pursuing at the moment, I am always grateful for the opportunity and strive to enjoy the moment.

If you would like to learn more about my two hobbies, please read on for a little bit of a primer on these two activities around the state of Georgia. Who knows, maybe I will see you on the track or out on the open water!

Deep Sea Fishing

The Atlantic Coast of Georgia offers access to some of the best deep sea fishing in all of North America. The waters are beautiful and home to many different species of fish that can be legally caught while following specific regulations. It is important that all fishermen follow these rules so we can enjoy healthy fisheries for many generations to come without harming our incredible environment. It is only a drive of a few short hours to get out to some of my favorite fishing spots along the coast.

Among the many great places I have been fortunate enough to fish from include St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, Sea Island, and more. All of these places have great charter groups than can quickly take you out into the perfect areas for whichever species you happen to be targeting that day. I have caught many different deep sea fish, a few of which include blue marlin, wahoo, kingfish, grouper, snapper, sailfish, and more. If you have never been deep sea fishing before, it is hard to explain the thrill that takes place when you feel the line go tight and you know you are in for the fight of your life. Because there are so many qualified charters to take you out, you don’t have to worry about lacking knowledge or equipment to get into the deep sea fishing game. Find a good charter to take a trip with and be prepared to get hooked for life.

One of my favorite things about deep sea fishing has nothing to do with catching the fish. A day spent out under the sun floating atop the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean is a treat enough even if the fish aren’t biting. The ocean offers a great peaceful feeling that can’t be replicated anywhere else. In the digital age that we live, it is always a welcome change to unplug and feel the ocean breezes come up off the water. Even if you aren’t much for fishing, I’ll bet you would enjoy a day out on the charter boat none-the-less.

Vintage Car Racing

Just like many other people throughout the south, I have always loved watching auto racing and have been fascinated by cars since I was a young child. Because of that, I ended up getting into a hobby known as vintage car racing. It is exactly as it sounds – auto racing of some of the coolest vintage cars you will ever see. One of the groups that facilitates these races is known as the NVRA, or National Vintage Racing Association. They hold races all around Georgia (and other southern states) and provide a place for people like myself to indulge in this unique passion.

When I think about what it is I like most about the vintage car racing experience, it is actually the people more than the cars or the races themselves. Since we all share a common interest, great friendships are commonly built around the track. Many of the people I have met during vintage car racing events are some of my favorite people in the world and I have built relationships that are very important to me.

With that said, I still love the cars. You never know what kind of great vehicles you will see at these events, and talking to the owners gives you great insight into the history and backstory of the car itself. Everyone takes great pride in the cars they bring to these events, so it is almost like talking to a parent when you ask about someone’s car. As with just about everyone else, I never have as much time as I would like to take part in these activities. However, I imagine that I will stay involved in vintage racing for the rest of my life and it is something that will hopefully become a bigger part of my daily life as I get older.

My two passions are very different, but in some ways the same. They both provide me with a way to get out of the daily routine and participate in something that is ‘out of the box’. Also, they give me a chance to meet some great people and spend time with old friends. While I love my work and my day to day life, I do cherish every chance I get to take part in a deep sea fishing adventure or a vintage car race.
